As Salaam Alaikum

Modern culture and philosophy is built upon the theory of progress. This is the idea that humans are always moving in a positive direction and that each generation is morally superior to those who came before them. Sadly, many Muslims have adapted this mindset and think we are superior to past nations. There is an element of kufr in this IF someone believes people today are morally superior to the first generation of Muslims. This makes it a dangerous theory for Muslims to adapt.

In my article "Golden Ages and Theories of History" I propose two alternative approaches to history that are grounded in our tradition:

1) Moral Regress - the idea that humanity peaked in piety and morality with the first generation of Muslims, and that we are in a steady decline towards the end times.

2) Cycles of Power - that empires rise and fall, and each empire may experience a period of Golden Ages before the fall
